What are Genital Warts?
Caused by human papilloma virus and with its location on the genitalia, genital warts are a sexually transmitted disease. Partners need to be evaluated and treated to prevent continued transmission. In addition the likelihood of having another sexually transmitted disease is greater.
In women it is important to have a gynecologic evaluation to determine any cervical involvement because some subtypes of human papilloma virus may predispose a patient to malignancy.
Treatment options are varied and they range from topical therapy to destructive methods. New advance in fighting genital warts and potential malignancy is the HPV vaccine.
